Tulsi Gabbard Urges FBI Agents to Defy Orders from Superiors

Former Representative Tulsi Gabbard, a Hawaii Democrat, urged FBI agents in a Friday tweet to defy superiors who abuse their power.

“It’s time for all good FBI agents to stand against any superior who’s abusing their power to target political opponents,” Gabbard wrote.

Gabbard also shared a column published in the New York Post about FBI Special Agent Steve Friend, who filed a whistleblower complaint Wednesday alleging that the agency has exaggerated claims about domestic terrorism and used the investigation of the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot to target conservatives, according to the newspaper.

Friend had allegedly refused to take part in raids connected to investigations regarding January 6, according to the New York Post column. He was suspended from the agency on Monday in Florida.

On Twitter, Gabbard said FBI employees should look to Friend’s case.

“Follow Friend’s example who put aside self-interest for our democracy. Every FBI/law enforcement officer’s loyalty must be to the Constitution/American ppl,” the former congresswoman wrote.

Newsweek has reached out to Gabbard and the FBI for comment.

After the FBI raided former President Donald Trump‘s Mar-a-Lago home in August as part of an investigation into whether he mishandled classified materials, some conservatives have blasted federal law enforcement officials.

In a post on his social network, Truth Social, on August 27, Trump asked: “When are the great Agents, and others, in the FBI going to say ‘we aren’t going to take it anymore,’ much as they did when James Comey read off a list of all of Crooked Hillary Clinton‘s crimes, only to say that no reasonable prosecutor would prosecute.”

“The wonderful people of the FBI went absolutely ‘nuts,’ so Comey had to backtrack and do a FAKE INVESTIGATION in order to keep them at bay. The end result, we won in 2016 (and did MUCH better in 2020!). But now the “Left” has lost their minds!!!” Trump added.

Other Republicans have defended the FBI in the wake of the Mar-a-Lago raid. In August, Representative Adam Kinzinger, an Illinois Republican, blamed Trump supporters for the rise in violent threats against the FBI after the law enforcement action.

“It’s ridiculous obviously for what the former president has done, in terms of saying, ‘This is an attack on my home, I did nothing wrong,’ and of course, from the little bit we know, it seems like there’s certainly good reasons for the FBI to have done what they did,” Kinzinger said in an interview on CNN.

Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, a Republican, also defended the FBI in August, saying that if “the GOP is going to be the party of supporting law enforcement, law enforcement includes the FBI.”
